INSTALL.md's npm table named `CODEWHALE_VERSION` as the canonical way to pin a release and demoted `DEEPSEEK_TUI_VERSION` to "legacy alias". It is the other way round: the wrapper reads `DEEPSEEK_TUI_VERSION || DEEPSEEK_VERSION` and nothing else (npm/codewhale/scripts/install.js:88-90, with both spellings covered by test/install.test.js:261-268). `CODEWHALE_VERSION` appears nowhere in npm/, scripts/, or crates/. The table marked the only working variable as legacy and the non-existent one as canonical, so anyone pinning a version got silently ignored. Added a line explaining why the installer keeps the `DEEPSEEK_*` spelling, since that is the obvious next question. ARCHITECTURE.md listed four source files that do not exist — `tools/subagent.rs` (it is a directory), `project_doc.rs`, `session.rs` (session code is at `core/session.rs`, already listed separately), and a top-level `ui.rs` distinct from `tui/ui.rs` (there is only one). Dropped the three that were pure duplicates or ghosts; corrected `subagent.rs` to the directory and replaced "Persistent sub-agent sessions" with what the surface actually is, since `subagent/coord.rs:5` calls the persistent-session lifecycle "retired lifecycle theater". Also removed "capacity flow guardrails" from the `crates/core` description — the capacity system was removed and no `capacity` symbol survives in that crate — and corrected the LSP default server map, which listed 7 servers and omitted `intelephense` (PHP) while naming the Python binary `pyright` instead of `pyright-langserver`. SKILLS.md said `Locale::shipped()` is 8 locales. It is 15 (localization.rs:70-88) — the parity contract understated its own coverage by seven languages, which undersells the thing the section exists to claim.

Codewhale Architecture
This document provides an overview of the codewhale architecture for developers and contributors.
Current boundary note (read the workspace version from Cargo.toml; this
boundary has held since v0.9.1):
crates/tuiis still the live end-user runtime for the TUI, runtime API, task manager, and tool execution loop.- Other workspace crates are being split out incrementally, but they are not yet the sole runtime source of truth.
- The LSP subsystem (
crates/tui/src/lsp/) is fully wired into the engine's post-tool-execution path (core/engine/lsp_hooks.rs), providing inline diagnostics afterFilewrite, edit, and patch actions. - The swarm agent system was removed in v0.8.5. The active sub-agent surface is
the single
agenttool; persistent RLM sessions are available through the deferredrlmaction family. No model-visible swarm tool remains in the active codebase.

DeepSeek API Endpoints
DeepSeek exposes OpenAI-compatible endpoints. The CLI uses:

https://api.deepseek.com/v1 is accepted for OpenAI SDK compatibility, and

drives turns through Chat Completions.

Tool Execution

Background Tasks

Model-visible durable task tools are a surface over this same manager. They do
not introduce a parallel work system: task_create enqueues normal tasks,
checklist_* updates task-local progress, task_gate_run and completed
task_shell_wait attach verification evidence, and automation runs enqueue
ordinary durable tasks.
Runtime Thread/Turn Timeline
- API/TUI creates or resumes a thread (
/v1/threads*) - Turn starts on the thread (

Durable Schema Gates
session_manager.rs,runtime_threads.rs, andtask_manager.rsembedschema_versionon persisted records.- On load, newer schema versions are rejected with explicit errors instead of silently truncating/overwriting data.
- This allows safe forward migrations and prevents corruption when binaries and stored state are out of sync.

Key Design Decisions
- Streaming-first: All LLM responses stream for responsiveness
- Tool safety: Ask and Auto-Review require approval according to tool and managed policy; Full Access removes ordinary prompts but not hard safety holds. Side-effectful MCP tools use the same boundary.
- Extensibility: MCP, skills, and hooks allow customization without code changes
- Cross-platform: Core works on Linux/macOS/Windows. Sandbox guarantees are platform-specific: macOS uses Seatbelt when available; Linux uses an installed bubblewrap executable only when explicitly enabled; Windows has no advertised OS command sandbox. Seccomp and the Windows helper contract are not wired into command execution.
- Minimal dependencies: Careful dependency selection for build speed
- Local-first runtime API: HTTP/SSE endpoints are intended for trusted localhost access and are served by the
crates/tuiruntime today
